Hi all, we are planning a trip next year to Orlando for our 30th wedding anniversary and are trying to decide whether to go for an appartment in the Oak Plantation Villas as hubby has had some surgery and can't eat very big portions so we are thinking of doing some of our own catering, has any body stayed there? We have been to Orlando only once before and stayed just off I Drive so are not too sure about Kissimmee, should we go or an appartment or a hotel with cooking facilities ?

i think that hotels have very limited cooking facilities so an apartment would be better, but you can share meals in usa, we dont have big appetites and nearly everywhere we go we get a starter and a main course between us, sometimes they charge you a couple of dollars but most often they dont, its an alternative to catering for yourselves

Hi Robbiej1 ~ good to have some new people posting.

Kissimmee is vast and like most places has some good and ‘not so good’ areas. Not sure about Oak Plantation Villas, we know it’s near Hoagland Blvd. The area is probably ‘OK’ but it’s not at the ‘better part’ of the 192.

Would go ‘self catering’ every time (apartment, condo or villa) so much more flexibility, if you want to eat out most of the time you can but when you just want to have some time ‘at home’ you don’t have to go anywhere.

Before we bought our own villa we always used to rent, in all the times we’ve been going to Orlando we have only spent a few weeks in hotels and that was in the ‘early days’.

Hope hubby is well and truly on the mend.

From the sound of it I would think a villa is your best option. We've stayed on Rolling Hills and Formosa Gardens - both very nice estates. If you want any more info about the villas we stayed in, send me a private message and I'll send you the details. Will it be just 2 of you? Some of the villas are enormous so you just need to watch the size when booking!! :D

Thanks for your replies all of you, we are a bit timid of booking independantly, there are just the two of us going so I think a villa would be far too big and possibly a bit too expensive, we are more interested in small appartments or condos so would welcome any suggestions

cypress pointe is nice, it has a full kitchen but its in lake buena vista, about a mile from the back entrance to the parks near crossroads, i think they do small condos at lucaya resort in kissimmee, we are staying in a villa on there ( i think ) in nov, so i can let you know what its like there

What are your plans for parks, shopping etc and are you planning on driving?

We've done lots of condos but most need a car.

thanks everyone for your replies again, we have totally chickened out of going self catering and have plumped for the Rosen Inn at point Orlando if we can get Virgin to play ball !(they say they price match but Thompsons are doing it cheaper) If the plan happens we are hoping to get 16 nights instead of 14 comeing back on Easter Saturday which gives us 2 days to recover before we have to go back to work !!! Justice Socks we are intending to drive this time and plan to do most of the parks, hopefully we manage more of disney than just epcot this time. Last time we did a trip down to Key Largo and Miami, I think we may just have a day at the coast somewhere instead , we'd also like to spend a bit longer at Busche gardens as we went on the bus so had to leave at 6 pm. We have so much to plan my mind is in a whirl !

My understanding of Virgins price match, is that it has to be the exact same holiday, that means flying Virgin with another company? IE Complete Orlando, Sunshine etc. If you have any luck let us know.

Disney Sharon, they have asked us how much we were quoted and are getting back to us tomorrow, but it is cheaper with Virgin on line than in House of Fraser's Virgin travel shop ( rock star service ) we may just go ahead and book it on line tomorrow if they can't help. We'd rather go with Virgin anyway, we are just trying our luck to be honest, I'll let you know how we get on, anything is worth a try !!

if you are planning to go to the coast and spend more time at busch, then go and stay a day or 2 somewhere like st petes or clearwater then you can do both, we stayed in newport richie a long time ago and tarpon springs, they are nice places

Right to give you an update, We are booked with Virgin, 16 nights, Premum economy, V room and car with fully comp insurance. We paid the deposit today and we ended up getting it for just under £100 off the online price but done through the shop. I really didn't thnk they would play the game but they did ! Now to find a good deal on park tickets but I'm sure with your help and advice I'll get that sorted soon. I have been spending a couple of years reading all your posts, especially the trippys without commenting on much, now I've got things booked I will be pestering you all with all sorts of stupid quesions so I hope you don't mind and have plenty of patience :D
